Plymouth Zoo opened  on April 19th 1962

It was run by the Chipperfield family, part being used as a quanantine area. It closed on January 8th 1978 as a result of falling visitor numbers, the site was converted into a skateboard park with the animals being rehoused at Longleat and Bournmouth zoo.

In the early 1970's I lived just off Outland Road at Peverell, on a quiet Sunday morning we would lie in bed and you could just hear the animals, particularly the parrots.
